Your Guide to Outdoor Activities in Connecticut

With a mix of coastal cities and rural areas, Connecticut is famed for its seaport in Mystic filled with centuries-old ships. Connecticut is the third smallest state by area and is named after the Connecticut River. Due to its extensive waterways and ports, Connecticut is famed for its maritime traditions (although it has no direct access to the sea). Despite the state’s relatively small size, it features wide regional variations in its landscape. From the northwestern Litchfield Hills featuring rolling mountains and horse farms to the southeastern New London County featuring beaches and maritime activities, there’s a little something from every outdoor adventurer in Connecticut.

Scenic Drives

Because Connecticut has a vast expanse of beautiful scenery, it’s no wonder that many can simply enjoy the outdoors with a scenic drive. There are many different routes to take, and one can pack a lunch or strap on their bike rack for a pitstop detour for lunch or a quick ride around the local areas.

If you’re considering taking a scenic drive, then opt for Merritt Parkway (Rte. 15) – which stretches 37 miles from the New York state line to the city of Milford – and discover charming farm towns, rich culture and exciting metropolitan centers. Stop at Stamford’s 91-acre Bartlett Arboretum to see more than 2,000 plants or have lunch at Paul Newman’s Dressing Room in Westport.
