Tips for First-Time Skiers and Snowboarders

Even the most experienced skiers and snowboarders had to start somewhere, and pro-athletes all had to start with their first time trying their sport. Youngsters and adults alike who are trying out skiing and snowboarding for the first time will want to not only research the sport a bit but will also want to take extra precautions to ensure safety and fun when hitting the slopes. Here are a few tips for first-time skiers and snowboarders.

Check the Weather and Prepare Accordingly

When starting a new outdoor sport, it’s best to start in weather conditions that are comfortable. Blizzard potentials and days that are simply too warm to sustain that powdery white perfection can make for a miserable first day on the slopes. If the day you plan to start just happens to be a little extra cold or blustery, then be sure that you’re prepared with the proper attire. You can always dress in layers and remove those layers as the day warms up or as you become more active.

Outfit Yourself with the Right Clothing and Gear

There’s nothing worse than hitting the slopes for the first time only to find out that you’re missing an essential piece of gear for the trip. While you can rent many of the larger pieces of equipment at the resort such as your skis or snowboard, you may want to purchase others (like goggles and apparel) ahead of time. Even rental items can benefit from the addition of other personal items; for instance, a helmet is likely included in your rental package (and may be required by the resort for use), but you’ll want to insulate your head as well with a balaclava or stretchy fleece hat to fit under the helmet. Review our skiing and snowboarding checklists before you hit the slopes.

Go with a Pro!

Rather than simply renting your gear and trying out the slopes on your own, it’s always safer to take a short class with a pro. Many resorts offer beginner’s packages that include a tutorial on how to get started on the slopes. Pros can help you equip yourself properly, navigate the do’s and don’t’s of the resort, and learn how to get up and on your skis or snowboard safely. Develop a feel for the snow with a lesson, and learn different riding strategies, as not everyone navigates the slopes the same way. Even the pros will have their preferences, so learning different techniques can help you to find one that’s most comfortable and, thus, safest for you.

If you’re a first-time skier or snowboarder, stock your gear, prepare yourself, and tag along with a pro in order to have a safe and enjoyable trip.
