DIY: How To Build A Catio
Many who cuddle up with cats as their pet of choice live in areas that simply aren’t safe for their cats to spend time outdoors. Without the safety of an enclosure, many don’t feel comfortable enough to allow their cats free range in and out of their house. Catios are giving cat owners a safe, comfortable way to allow their furry felines some much-needed time outdoors without having to monitor thier cat’s activities constantly. Here’s how you can Do It Yourself!
1. Measure the area you’re able to dedicate to your catio. Remember, the area for your catio has both a footprint and vertical space consumption and must give the cats a way to easily access your home (usually via a window). Some can forego the footprint in lieu of a catio that is suspended from a window like a window box.
2. Construct the frame. The frame for your catio can be comprised of a myriad of materials. From plastics to wood to even metal, just be sure that the material is strong and safe for your furry friends.
3. Stretch caging material over the frame. You’ll want this material to be durable enough to withstand weathering while still allowing your cats to get a sense of being free in the outdoors.
4. Fill it with perches and activities. This is the part where you can get creative. If your catio consists of more than just a slender, exposed walkway or a window box, then you’ve likely got a lot of open space to work with. Build ramps, perches, and other items to give your cat the freedom to exercise while out in the catio!
5. Release the beast! When you’re sure the catio is secured and ready for your cat, simply allow them the freedom to access the catio on their own terms. It might take a little warming up, but soon enough, you’ll have one happy indoor/outdoor kitty.
