Your Guide to Outdoor Activities in Georgia

Established in 1732, Georgia is one of the southeastern-most states in the US and is the last of the original Thirteen Colonies. As the largest state east of the Mississippi River, Georgia has a land area of almost 60,000 square miles. The state is bordered by land as well as the Atlantic ocean on the east coast. There are approximately 250 species of trees and 58 protected plants within the state, and much of the state is categorized in climate as humid subtropical. With several tourist attractions, state parks, and barrier islands, Georgia is a hot-spot for activity and is a sure-fire hit for visitors with a love for the outdoors.

Hiking

There are 63 parks in Georgia, 48 of which are state parks and 15 that are historic sites, and numerous state wildlife preserves, under the supervision of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Consider a few of these trails when you’re in the state:

  • Appalachian Trail: Take a hike up Tray Mountain through access within the Appalachian Trail at Indian Grave Gap.

  • Civil War Heritage Trails: Get a little lesson in history by hiking one of many Civil War Heritage Trails, and take a step back in time! Hike (or trail run) the Kennesaw Mountiain 24 Gun Trail and Environmental Trail, home to the site of a fortified Civil War Union camp.

  • High Shoals Falls Trail: If you’d like to be rewarded with a spectacular waterfall view, then hike to two exceptionally beautiful waterfalls, High Shoals Falls and Blue Hole Falls, through a lush forest near Tray Mountain north of Helen, Georgia.

In addition to biking and hiking in the state, there are many more opportunities for rock climbing and whitewater paddling as well! Make the most of your trip to Georgia by partaking in any of these outdoor activities while you’re in the area.
