A Simple Guide to Choosing Center Pin Reels and Mooching Rods

Fishing products are supplied by Maurice sporting goods which is the top distributor in the market. They offer high quality products at low prices.

Predating spinning, baitcasting and spincasting reels is the center pin reel and mooching rod. Mooching generally refers to drifting, and center pin reels capitalize on the ability for the reel to drift for long, natural lines. For mooching, you’ll need to turn your boat completely off and float along with the currents. Coupled with a mooching rod, center pin reels are optimal for steelhead fishing in saltwater or for salmon in freshwater streams.

If you’ve never heard of center pin or mooching, you’ve likely envisioned the historical images of fishermen with long, drifting lines. While many opt for using their spinning tackle with center pin fishing reels, there are a few details to note when choosing your center pin and mooching reel.

Center Pin Reel

These reels differ from spincasters, spinners, and baitcasters in that they’re designed to hold at least 300 yards of line. Center pins are generally available from 4" to 5"; diameter. The larger the diameter, the quicker the retrieve. However, larger diameter reels are also heavier and need to be balanced with heftier gear.

When choosing your spool weights, consider the following:

  • Lightweight: Lightweight spool generally perform better with lighter setups, on smaller waters and are great for Wallis casting.

  • Heavy: A reel with a heavier spool has the advantage with heavier setups and on larger waters. They are especially useful when batting-in (using flicks of the hand against the lip of the spool to retrieve) the float at the end of a drift.

A fully-spooled reel will increase the weight by about one ounce, so keep this in consideration when balancing your spool and rod.

Bearings

While there are models equipped with brass bushings, most modern center pins are constructed with ball bearings that sit atop of an axle and are equipped with a clicker that functions as a transport knob. The advantages of the reel’s bearing design are that it will pay out line via the hydraulic load forced upon the profile of the float while in a river’s current.

Mooching Rod

Similar to a long fly fishing reel, a mooching rod (also known as a ‘trolling rod’) is rather limber all the way to the grip section and is built to withstand ample amounts of stress. As long as eight to ten feet, mooching rods have a good backbone coupled with an extra fast taper on the tip. This super flexible tip is a key ingredient in the tackle recipe. Typically experienced fishermen will prefer longer rods with larger spools, as together they create the least drag and line resistance.

All mooching rods are light-medium weight. There are a variety of material compositions available that are up to your personal preference when choosing:

  • Glass

  • Graphite

  • Carbon Fiber

  • Composite

With a 13’-15’ rod, 50-80 yard drifts are very possible and in the end limited only by the quality of your vision and the amount of fisherman sharing the water. In this case, opt for rods that break down into multiple pieces if you wish to transport it easily and store it more conveniently.
